To give yourself the best shot at your deposit, clean to the standard in your lease, then photograph every room once you are done. Landlords look at kitchens, bathrooms, floors and appliances first. This checklist walks through each room in order. If you would rather hand it off, a JNC one-time clean starts at $125, a deep clean at $250, and a move-out clean includes the inside of appliances and closets.

What do landlords check when you move out?

They compare the unit with the move-in condition and look for dirt, damage beyond normal wear, and anything left behind. The fastest way to see what counts is to read your lease and any move-in inspection form. If you rent near Liberty University or elsewhere in Lynchburg, check your lease for the move-out date, the cleaning requirements and the form of the final walkthrough. No cleaner can promise a deposit, since the landlord decides, but a thorough clean with photos leaves less to argue about.

What is on the move-out cleaning checklist?

Start at the top of each room and work down, so dust and crumbs fall onto surfaces you will clean next.

Doing it yourself costs time and supplies, and the oven, the fridge and the shower are the slowest parts. A professional clean is worth it when your schedule is tight or the unit has gone a while without a deep clean. See the one-time cleaning and deep cleaning pages for details.

When should I book?

Book as soon as you know your move-out date. Same-week booking is often available in Lynchburg, but it depends on the calendar, so book early. Book the clean for after your movers are done and everything is out, and before your final walkthrough.

What can I do before the movers arrive?

Start early on the parts that take the longest and do not depend on the rest of the move.

  • Empty the fridge, freezer and pantry a few days before moving out, so the appliance can be cleaned without a rush.
  • Take down wall hangings and check your lease for what to do with nail holes. Ask your landlord if it is unclear.
  • Pack the items you use daily last, so the kitchen and bathroom stay usable until the end.
  • Take photos of the unit as it is, so you have a record of the condition before and after the clean.

What is normal wear and what is damage?

Normal wear is the gradual change that comes from living in a home: light marks on walls, minor scuffs on floors and faded paint. Damage is something beyond that, such as holes, stains, burns, broken fixtures and torn carpet. Landlords and tenants sometimes disagree about where the line is, so check your lease and keep your photos. Cleaning will not repair damage, but it will remove the dirt, which is what most deductions come down to.

What supplies do I need if I clean myself?

Gather these before you start.

  • All-purpose cleaner and a disinfectant for bathrooms
  • Glass cleaner and microfiber cloths
  • A scrub brush, sponges and a grout brush
  • Oven cleaner and gloves
  • A vacuum, a mop and a bucket
  • Trash bags

JNC brings supplies to every visit, so with a booked clean there is nothing to buy.

What if I only have a few hours?

Prioritize the places landlords look at first. Do the kitchen (oven, fridge, counters, sink), then the bathrooms (tub, toilet, mirror), then floors. Dust and wipe what you can with the time left. If time is short and the unit is large, handing the clean to someone else is better than rushing the walkthrough.

What about garages, patios and storage?

Check your lease for what counts as part of the unit. Garages, patios, balconies and storage rooms are often included in the final walkthrough. Sweep them, remove everything you own, and wipe anything that was in contact with food or spills. These areas are quick to do and easy to forget, and they show up in photos.

What should I do after the clean?

  1. Walk each room and check it against your list.
  2. Take dated photos of every room, the inside of the oven and fridge, the tub and the floors.
  3. Keep the photos with your lease paperwork.
  4. Return keys as your lease directs, and get something in writing if you can.
